This being the second part of a five-part series counting down the best jersey numbers in the history of Nebraska football, contrary to what I usually do, I didn’t use any objective numbers or statistics; I just went off of personal opinion. Star power and depth were equally important in determining the rankings.
Coming in at No. 4: #15
Many Husker fans argue that Tommie is the greatest Husker quarterback ever, and some argue he is the greatest player ever. They won’t be getting much argument for me, as three national championship MVPs and two national championship trophies speak for themselves. Oh, and then there is this. (And, this).
Vince was a transfer from Cal and had the tough task of following up two fantastic quarterbacks, a national champion in Jerry Tagge and an All-American in Dave Humm. To Coach Osborne and the rest of the state’s relief, he did not disappoint. He set multiple passing records during his tenure, most of which have just recently been broken in the past decade. A lot of Husker enthusiasts say that Vince had one of the strongest and most accurate arms of any Husker quarterback to ever don the scarlet and cream.
As a linebacker, Octavien wore a somewhat uncommon jersey number in #15. He played on a defense that struggled at times during the last two years of the Callahan era, but led the team in tackles in 2007 and was named the Huskers’ Defensive MVP. He is currently on the Dallas Cowboys roster.
We’ll be releasing Nos. 3, 2, and 1 one-by-one. Keep guessing as to what jersey numbers top #7 and #15.
