Ok, so I did not attend the game as I was hosting the first ever HotHuskers.com tailgate (It was awesome click here for pix), Anyway, thanks to our new conference and cox cable I did record and watch the game (twice actually). At the tailgate I went old school and listened to the game on KFAB which if you are of a certain age you know that “back in the day” you had to listen to several games every year by radio to get your Husker gameday fix. And, for me there is still a certain bit of excitement to that.

Listening to this game by radio drove me nuts as I was wondering what the heck was going on with our new vaunted offensive attack. While the final score seemed about right I listened to one frustrated Husker fan after another complain post game at the tailgate. I will not quote the comments directly, but most frustration was on the offense and Martinez. And there were some voice of concern over how our D line got pushed around a bit at times. Really?

So, by the time I got to my tv to watch the game Sunday night I was expecting to see this mess of Husker football for the start of 2011. As I watched most of the first half I had to agree with my earlier thoughts and what I heard too. Heck the Huskers even started the game with a botched kickoff return. The Huskers indeed looked as though they were uptight about performing well at the start of the game. But after watching the game twice it seemed they gained a bit more rhythm on offense after the first quarter.

However, it is apparent there is still work to do. I love the coach speak cliche that a football team improves more between the first and second games of the season that at any other point. I sure hope that is true because we should NOT expect Fresno State to be a push over this coming Saturday. You can expect they will load up the box and try to force Martinez into difficult situations. Hopefully the Huskers offense will brush off how they performed last week because we need the momentum going into the Washington game.

This Husker football season has been like an episode of the Twilight Zone for most Husker fans. I think most Husker fans expected some subtle issues as the season would progress, but I think most thought it would come from the opposing Big 12 team fan base. Whether you believe in a Big 12 conspiracy or not, it is hard to escape certain realities of the past 3 months. Some can be outlined here Illegal Procedure On The Big 12 and debunked here Debunking The Nebraska Conspiracy Theories

The bottom line is that, well, some very strange stuff has been going on all year for the Huskers. Conspiracies, players quitting (or not), coaches being publicly chastised, and oh so much more. And, now the Huskers are rewarded for their 10 wins and Big 12 Championship game appearance by playing a team in The Holiday Bowl that they hung 56 points on this past September? Crazy stuff indeed!

What can a Husker fan do? Husker fan can point the finger everywhere while jumping up and down and screaming about life not being fair. What will that solve? Nothing! What has happened can not be changed. Sure this year has been goofy to say the least but let’s keep some perspective on this. The Huskers have a chance to win 11 games for the first time in how long? The Huskers will be in the Big 10 when? The Huskers have a Top 10 recruiting class loaded with offensive talent and a Head Coach that is a defensive genius. I think Husker fan should follow Coach Bo’s philosophy and point the thumb instead of the finger. Let’s point the thumb at ourselves and make it our personal responsibility to support our team for a huge Holiday Bowl win.

GO BIG RED!

In my opinion the Huskers got robbed by the ref’s in last nights game with Texas A&M. And, I know many Husker fans are with me on that. But, regardless of the outcome there was a significant uncalled penalty and possibly an assault on Ben Cotton by a Texas A&M player. Please play the short video for proof.

In my opinion this borders on sexual assault. And, at a minimum the Texas A&M player should be suspended. A few weeks ago Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe suspended Husker Eric Martin for a hit on a “defenseless” player. At the time ( and still) I thought that was questionable. But there is no question about this attack on Ben Cotton. As fans of college football we should ALL demand that officiating and suspensions be equitable to keep the integrity of our game. So, Mr. Beebe whats it going to be? If you do nothing maybe the NCAA will investigate? And if they do maybe they can look at why the refs of this game attended the Texas A&M Pep Rally Friday night?

Is there now a smoking gun of a Big 12 Husker Bias?

The 2010 Husker Football class is set. And, while the Huskers may not have a nationally ranked Top 10 class, they did fill obvious needs. Sure, it would have been great to land Owamagbe Odighizuwa the great Defensive End from Oregon. But The Huskers got some true gems in Cory Cooper (Safety) and Brion Carnes (QB). Both were very highly recruited and somewhat of a surprise signing day decision for the Huskers. The Huskers also got a highly rated speedster running back, Braylon Heard. But to me the biggest addition is that of Jemarcus Hardrick (OL) or “Yoshi” as he is known. Yoshi is a huge man at 6′7 and 315 lbs and plays with an attitude. I expect him to be more of an immediate impact than any other player in the Huskers 2010 class. You can see a complete list of the 2010 Huskers here

Now I know many of you will think this class must not be great because the national pundits give the Huskers no love. Not so fast my friend, National Recruit Rankings are based on total points accumulated. So, the Huskers with a small class this year really had little chance of reaching a Top 10 ranking or even a Top 25. And, before any Callahan apologists try to stake a claim about his Top 10 class of 2005 remember he had about 30 recruits that year compared to 21 for the Huskers this year. AND, more importantly every single one of these recruits WANTS to be a Husker and play for Coach Pelini. You can BOLIEVE this class will leave a lasting impression on you!

The Huskers really do not have much to lose. And, they are not expected to beat the Longhorns. Texas has the high powered offense and an undefeated season on the line. A win will put Texas in the National Championship game. The Huskers are a 14 point underdog. Add to all this, the Huskers must play the Longhorns in Texas!

Sounds like a recipe for disaster!

Not so fast my friend! I like the Huskers in this game. Why? First, because I get the feeling that Texas has no respect for the Cornhuskers. Second, the Huskers defense is every bit as good as Oklahoma’s which held Texas to 16 points. Third, smash mouth football! The Huskers will be the most physical team the Longhorns have played this year. Fourth, the Huskers have the advantage on special teams.

Texas will not know what hit them…. It will be Suhper!
